What is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?▾

An IDP is an official translation of your driver's license issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention or 1968 Vienna Convention — Taiwan accepts both.

An IDP is not a standalone license; it must be carried together with your original home country license. You must obtain it in your home country before traveling.

How long can I drive in Taiwan on a foreign license?▾

Under Taiwan's Road Traffic Safety Regulations (Article 50), foreign visitors can drive during their lawful stay, up to a maximum of 1 year.

Exceptions: Hong Kong license holders can drive directly for up to 1 year without an IDP. Macau residents may drive for the first 14 days without registration.

Japan: IDP or JAF translation?▾

Taiwan and Japan have a bilateral recognition agreement. Japan does not issue 1949 Geneva Convention IDPs — use the official JAF Japanese-to-English translation document instead.

Required: original Japanese license + JAF translation (~¥3,000). Both must be carried while driving.

Can mainland China license holders drive in Taiwan?▾

No. Mainland China (PRC) driver's licenses are not recognized in Taiwan under any circumstances. There is no bilateral agreement or IDP arrangement.

Which IDP conventions does Taiwan accept?▾

Both carry equal validity in Taiwan — any officially issued IDP from either convention is accepted.
