Yilan (宜蘭) faces the northeast monsoon in autumn and winter, which carries moisture straight in from the sea — so if you visit in the cooler months, expect rain. When the beaches and mountain trails are washed out, the real question is: where do you spend a wet day, and how do you get around without waiting at bus stops in the rain? This guide covers only Yilan's indoor venues and tourism factories, grouped into three routes — Jiaoxi & Toucheng, Yilan City & Yuanshan, and Wujie & Su'ao. Why driving beats buses on a rainy day in Yilan

Yilan's indoor venues are spread out: the Meizhou (梅洲) factory cluster is on the north-west side of Yilan City, the Siho seafood factory is in the Lize (利澤) industrial area in Wujie, the Yilan cake museum and the crayon castle are in Su'ao, and the Kavalan distillery is out in Yuanshan. Very few of them are next to a train station, and changing buses in the rain with children or older relatives is exhausting.

With a car you go door to door and park right by the entrance — the official websites of Dr. Duck, the Yilan Cake Invention Museum, the Baimi Clog Museum and the King Car aquaculture centre all mention on-site parking. You can also add or drop a stop depending on how heavy the rain is.

Before you go: pickup times at the three Yilan stations

The three pickup points work differently. Yilan Station and Jiaoxi Station are self-service parking-lot locations; Luodong Station is a staffed branch. The times you can book online also differ:

At a glance: Yilan's rainy-day indoor venues

Drive times start from the nearest GoodCars station and come from Google Maps (checked 26 Sep 2026); actual times depend on traffic. DIY rules are taken from each venue's official site or the Ministry of Economic Affairs tourism-factory pages. Opening hours, closing days and ticket prices change — please check each venue's official website before you go.

Route 1: Jiaoxi Station — a half day indoors on a hot-spring trip (Toucheng & Jiaoxi)

Ideal if you're staying in Jiaoxi (礁溪) for the hot springs. Collect your car at the Jiaoxi Station parking lot, spend the morning indoors and be back for a soak in the afternoon. More on the area in our Jiaoxi car rental guide.

• Lanyang Museum (蘭陽博物館, Toucheng): Yilan's best-known indoor museum, about 18–22 minutes from Jiaoxi Station. No regular DIY; guided tours follow the museum's booking rules. Parking is in a contracted pay car park.
• King Car aquaculture R&D centre (金車生技水產養殖研發中心, Jiaoxi): an indoor visitor centre themed on aquaculture, about 8–10 minutes from the station, with a large car park according to its website. There's a DIY area, but booking rules aren't published — call ahead.

Suggested order: Jiaoxi Station → Lanyang Museum → lunch back in Jiaoxi → King Car aquaculture centre → hot spring in the evening. Route 2: Yilan Station — city museums, the Meizhou factories and Yuanshan's distillery (a full day)

This is Yilan's densest cluster of indoor venues. Collect your car at the Yilan Station parking lot and split the day into three parts.

① City centre (5–7 minutes from the station)

• Yilan Distillery & Jiazilan Wine Museum (宜蘭酒廠・甲子蘭酒文物館): the wine museum inside the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Yilan Distillery, about 6–7 minutes away. Indoor exhibits plus an outdoor factory area; DIY and staff-guided tours must be booked in advance.
• Yilan Museum of Art (宜蘭美術館): an indoor art museum in the city centre, about 5 minutes away. It closes between exhibitions, so check the website first.

② Meizhou factory cluster (11–15 minutes; the three are close together)

• 橘之鄉蜜餞形象館: a kumquat and candied-fruit factory. Its website says groups of up to 11 can join DIY on the spot — handy when you decide at the last minute.
• 亞典蛋糕密碼館 (R.Den cake factory): a baking-themed factory; DIY must be booked by phone in advance, with different rules for individuals and groups.
• 菌寶貝博物館: a museum about microbes and probiotics; DIY has a minimum group size and must be booked several days ahead.

③ Yuanshan (about 21–23 minutes from the station)

• Kavalan whisky distillery (金車噶瑪蘭威士忌酒廠): the production line and exhibition tour are indoors; the standard tour needs no booking, but DIY and cellar tastings are best booked ahead. Whoever is driving should skip the tasting — never drink and drive.
• Aromatic plant museum (香草菲菲芳香植物博物館): mostly a glasshouse full of herbs and aromatic plants, green even on a grey day; call to check DIY rules.

Suggested order: two DIY sessions in Meizhou in the morning → lunch in the city and the Yilan Distillery → Kavalan or the aromatic plant museum in the afternoon → return the car at Yilan Station. Route 3: Luodong Station — hands-on factories in Wujie & Su'ao (best for kids)

Almost every tourism factory in southern Yilan has an indoor DIY session — pencils, crayons, Yilan cakes — and an afternoon disappears quickly. Collect your car at the Luodong Station branch (No. 88 Yangming Road, back-station side). ① Wujie (4–18 minutes from Luodong Station)

• Dr. Duck tourism factory (博士鴨觀光工廠): the closest, about 4–5 minutes, with a large car park according to its website. Some DIY (such as painting a duck) can be done on the spot; cooking classes need booking 3 days ahead.
• Jade Rabbit Pencil School (玉兔鉛筆學校): a pencil-themed tour and DIY, about 6–7 minutes. Its website says booking only, no same-day online bookings — reserve before you go.
• Foot & shoe health museum (台灣足鞋健康知識館): opposite Zhongli (中里) railway station, about 7–9 minutes; booking required, with scheduled guided sessions.
• National Center for Traditional Arts, Yilan (國立傳統藝術中心 宜蘭傳藝園區): about 12–15 minutes. The exhibition halls are indoors but the old street is open-air, so save it for lighter rain; the car park charges a fee.
• Siho seafood factory (溪和水產觀光工廠): in the Lize industrial area, about 14–18 minutes. Walk-in visitors don't need to book — buy a ticket and sign up for DIY.

② Su'ao (12–25 minutes from Luodong Station)

• Crayon castle (蜡藝蜡筆城堡): a crayon-themed venue; groups under 30 can walk in with a ticket.
• Yilan Cake Invention Museum (宜蘭餅發明館): on the same road as the crayon castle, with a large car park according to its website. It offers baking DIY and tours with an online booking link — book ahead.
• Mackerel Dream Factory (大鯖魚夢工廠): a mackerel-themed factory that joined the Ministry of Economic Affairs tourism-factory list in February 2026; DIY by booking.
• Kili Bay Pearl Milk Tea Cultural Center (奇麗灣珍奶文化館): all about bubble tea; walk-in visitors welcome, packages need booking.
• Baimi Clog Museum (白米木屐館): a wooden-clog museum, about 19–25 minutes; official online tickets (tour plus DIY) must be booked by the day before, and its booking page mentions on-site parking.

Suggested order: Luodong Station → a pre-booked DIY in Wujie in the morning (Jade Rabbit or Dr. Duck) → lunch in Luodong → Freeway 5 to Su'ao for the crayon castle and the Yilan Cake Invention Museum on the same road → back to Luodong to return the car. Five tips for driving Yilan in the rain

• Book DIY first: the pencil school is booking-only and R.Den and the probiotics museum need advance booking. Rainy days are peak days for indoor venues, so lock in the session you want and keep walk-in venues (the candied-fruit factory, Siho, the crayon castle) as back-ups.
• Check closing days: every venue has regular closing days or exhibition changeovers — look at the official site the night before.
• Fog on hill roads: roads toward the hills around Yuanshan and Sanxing can fog up in the rain. Use headlights, slow down and keep your distance; in heavy rain, stay with the venues on the plain.
• Keep a towel and spare clothes in the car: you'll still get a little wet between the car park and the door, especially with kids.

Yilan Station and Jiaoxi Station are self-service parking-lot locations bookable online 00:00–23:55, with payment completed online as part of the booking, so late trains and early starts both work. Luodong Station can be booked online for 09:00–21:00; for pickup or return outside business hours, call the branch in advance and we'll arrange it (+886 3-956-0505). Q6. Do I need to add fuel before returning the car?
