Most of Taiwan's autumn colour grows above 1,000 m, in mountains where buses are infrequent and the foliage changes week by week — a car lets you pick the day, the weather and the light. This guide turns the 2026 season (autumn 2026 to January 2027) into one timeline of seven places worth the drive. For each one we list the best time according to the park or managing agency, the road controls you need to know about, and the nearest GoodCars pickup point with driving time. Wuling Farm's maples have already started turning early this year, so it's worth planning now.

2026–2027 foliage timeline: when each spot peaks

Leaves turn with each cold front and with the gap between day and night temperatures, so the peak shifts by a week or two every year. The timings below come from the parks' or managing agencies' own notices and statements — check the official foliage update again a week before you go.

Every year is different: in 2026 Wuling Farm's "welcome maple" turned at least a month earlier than usual, while in 2024 Alishan's colour was delayed to late November/early December by unusual weather. Always go by each park's current notice.

The 7 spots: best time, road controls and nearest pickup

Listed in the order the colour arrives. Driving times were checked on Google Maps from each GoodCars branch; real times vary with holiday traffic, weather and road controls, so always leave extra time on mountain roads.

1. Taipingshan (太平山), Yilan: golden Taiwan beech, mid-Oct to mid-Nov

Taipingshan's autumn star is the Taiwan beech turning gold — strictly speaking not a maple, but the earliest autumn colour on the island. The official best viewing window is mid-October to mid-November; the Taiwan Beech Trail starts near Cuifeng Lake (翠峰湖) and is about 3.8 km one way.

• Peak-season vehicle limits: the recreation area caps the total number of vehicles all year (1,000 in the 2025 notice). On every Saturday and Sunday of the 2025 beech season (25 Oct–23 Nov), the Cuifeng Scenic Road was further limited to 200 vehicles, with 9-seat passenger vans and Cuifeng Lodge guests among those not counted. Check the Taipingshan website for the 2026 dates and rules.
• Roads: an August 2026 notice lists several single-lane, alternating-traffic sections on the park road (宜專一線); in winter, cold snaps can bring snow-related controls.

2. Wuling Farm (武陵農場): turning early in 2026 — closest from Yilan

Wuling Farm is technically in Taichung, but it's much closer by car from Yilan than from Taichung. The farm's own directions: from Taipei via Freeway 5 to Yilan, then Provincial Highways 7 and 7A (台7甲線) — about 3.5 hours; from Taichung via Puli, Hehuanshan and Lishan — about 5 hours.

• Foliage: CNA reported on 23 September 2026 that the "welcome maple" by Wanshou Bridge and the maples in the campground had already partly turned, at least a month earlier than usual. The farm expects the maple season to start in early/mid-October and last into December.
• Nearest branches: Luodong Station branch, about 2 hr 20 min, 89–91 km; Yilan Station (宜蘭車站, self-service car park pickup and return), about 2 hr 20 min–2 hr 25 min, 92–94 km. 3. Fushoushan Farm (福壽山農場), Lishan: November is maple month

Fushoushan Farm's seasonal page marks November as its autumn maple month. It sits near Wuling in the Lishan area, so the two combine well over two days.

• Official road advice: the northern route runs from Yilan on Highways 7 and 7A; the central route from Taichung takes Freeway 6, Highway 14 and 14A over Hehuanshan. Highway 8 between Guguan and Deji (the Central Cross-Island Highway detour) is closed to private drivers. County Road 89 (投89, the Lixing Industrial Road) is in poor condition with frequent rockfall, and the farm advises against it — if your navigation app picks it as the fastest route, switch to Highway 14A.
• Winter: the farm warns that the Wuling Pass (武嶺) stretch over Hehuanshan may require snow chains or be closed pre-emptively when there's snow or ice.
• Nearest branches: Luodong Station branch, about 3 hours, 111–115 km; Yilan Station, about 3 hours, 113–114 km (both via Highway 7A). From Taichung via Highway 14A: HSR Taichung about 3 hr 20 min (151 km), Taichung Railway Station branch about 3 hr 30 min (148 km).

4. Alishan (阿里山), Chiayi: turning from mid-November, best late Nov–December

Alishan National Forest Recreation Area lies at about 2,200–2,700 m, and the official page describes autumn as the season of "red maples and sea of clouds". The Chiayi branch of the forestry agency says the leaves normally turn in mid-November; in 2024 unusual weather pushed that to late November/early December. Maples are densest around the Mt. Xiaoliyuan (小笠原山) viewing platform, Ciyun Temple (慈雲寺), the Zhushan (祝山) platform, and beside Duigaoyue and Zhaoping stations.

• Nearest branch: HSR Chiayi Station (嘉義高鐵站, self-service pickup in the station car park), via Highway 18 (the Alishan Highway), about 1 hr 55 min–2 hours, 82–85 km.

5. Aowanda (奧萬大), Nantou: November to January — it needs a proper cold snap

Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area has large native sweetgum forests, and the official page says the red season is "generally November to the following January" — but the leaves only turn fully after a strong cold front with a 15°C gap between day and night. Before the first real cold snap, only part of the forest may be red, so it pays to time your visit just after one.

• Access and limits: the official route is Freeway 3 to Freeway 6, exit at the Puli end, then County Road 83 (投83) into the park. Open 08:00–17:00; parking for about 280 cars; coaches with 26 or more seats are not allowed in.
• Nearest branch: HSR Taichung Station (self-service pickup in the station car park), about 1 hr 45 min–2 hours, 96–98 km; the Taichung Railway Station branch is about 1 hr 50 min, 94 km. Pickup steps: Taichung HSR car rental guide.
• Add Cingjing: Aowanda and Cingjing Farm (清境農場) are both in Ren'ai Township, an easy two-day trip. Higher up, Hehuanshan has a winter snow-season regime: in 2025 it ran from 1 January to 2 March, with the road closed 18:00–07:00 when there's snow or ice, and no motorcycles allowed. 6. Dasyueshan (大雪山), Taichung: reddest from early to late December

Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area sits at 2,000–2,600 m, with Taiwan red maple, green maple, sweetgum and other maples. On 10 December 2024 the forestry agency's Taichung branch reported about 60% red around Xiaoxueshan (小雪山) at km 49 of the forest road and said "from now until late December is the most beautiful period". Temperatures on the mountain were around 7–16°C, so pack a warm jacket.

• Access and limits: the official route is Freeway 4 to the Fengshi interchange, Highway 3 towards Dongshi, right onto Highway 8 (Dongguan Road) after Dongshi Bridge, then left after about 2 km onto Dongkeng Road — the Dasyueshan Forest Road — about 1.5 hours to the park. Large (class A) coaches are banned above km 15; the park is open 06:30–17:00.
• Fuel: the official page notes there are no filling stations along the forest road. Top up in Dongshi with the car's fuel card before you head up — you don't pay for the fuel yourself.
• Snow: in past cold snaps the Taichung branch announced that, when snow falls, only vehicles fitted with snow chains may go above km 43, with checks at the km 35 toll station.
• Nearest branch: Taichung Railway Station branch (pickup/return bookable online 09:00–21:00; call +886-4-2201-0077 first for night-time), about 1 hr 50 min–2 hours, 64–67 km; HSR Taichung is about 1 hr 50 min–2 hours, 72–73 km.

7. Shimen Reservoir (石門水庫), Taoyuan: the lowland finale, mid/late Dec to early Jan

Shimen Reservoir has more than 3,000 green maples and other maple trees — northern Taiwan's autumn colour without the mountain drive. Based on past statements by the Northern Region Water Resources Branch and the Taoyuan City Government, the leaves start turning in mid/late December and stay colourful into early January, often looking their best around Christmas. The main spots are the Maple Trail (楓林步道), Qilin Park (槭林公園), Xizhou Boulevard (溪洲大道) and Nanyuan (南苑); the water agency suggests entering through the "high-line" toll gate (高線收費站).

• Nearest branches: Pingzhen Fumei (平鎮復梅站, self-service in a Times car park), about 35–40 min, 21–28 km. Arriving by high-speed rail? • What about Lalashan (拉拉山)? Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area, also in Fuxing District, has green maples, red maples and other trees that change colour, but no official foliage dates are published and parking is limited (one in, one out when full). Some sections of the Northern Cross-Island Highway (Highway 7) have had pre-emptive night closures in recent years, so drive it in daylight. It's about 2 hr 10 min (75 km) from Pingzhen Fumei. According to Yangmingshan National Park headquarters, the silvergrass season runs from about late September to mid-November, looking its best after mid-October; the Qingtiangang (擎天崗) grassland is the easiest place to see it. Driving mountain roads in foliage season: 6 things to do

• Check three sources before you go: the forestry agency's Taiwan Forest Recreation site (notices and foliage updates for Taipingshan, Aowanda, Dasyueshan, Alishan and Lalashan), the Wuling Farm and Fushoushan Farm websites, and the Highway Bureau's real-time provincial highway information (Highways 7, 7A, 8 and 14A).
• Go up in the morning, come down early: fog and rain are common in the afternoon, and visibility drops fast; popular park car parks often fill by mid-morning at weekends.
• Top up before the climb: filling stations are scarce in the mountains, so use the car's fuel card to top up in the valley — you don't pay for the fuel yourself.
• Use a low gear downhill: don't ride the brakes on long descents; shift down and let the engine slow you. Slow down before bends and keep right when passing oncoming cars. Taiwan drives on the right — see our traffic rules guide for foreign drivers.
• Winter snow rules: from December, cold fronts can mean snow-chain-only rules or pre-emptive closures on the high sections of Hehuanshan and Dasyueshan. If a control is in force, change your plan rather than pushing on.
• Choosing a car: an ordinary 5-seat car handles the main scenic roads; for bigger groups, lots of luggage or older passengers, a 7–9 seater is more comfortable — compare in our 7- and 9-seater rental guide.

Q1. When is the best time to see autumn colour in Taiwan in 2026?

It depends on where: mid-October to mid-November for Taipingshan's beech and Wuling Farm; November for Fushoushan; late November to December for Alishan; December for Dasyueshan; November to January for Aowanda; mid/late December to early January for Shimen Reservoir. Peaks shift a little every year, so check the official notice a week before.

Q2. For Wuling Farm and Fushoushan, should I pick up in Taichung or Yilan?

Yilan (Luodong) is closer. Google Maps shows about 2 hr 20 min from our Luodong Station branch to Wuling and about 3 hours to Fushoushan; from Taichung via Highway 14A it's 3 hr 20 min or more to Fushoushan, over Hehuanshan in winter. Highway 8 between Guguan and Deji is closed to private drivers.

Q3. Do I need an SUV or a big car for the mountains?

Not necessarily. An ordinary 5-seat car handles the main scenic roads in this guide; a bigger car is about passenger numbers, luggage and comfort on long climbs. Note that during the 2025 beech-season weekend controls at Taipingshan, 9-seat passenger vans were not counted in the 200-vehicle limit on the Cuifeng Scenic Road — check the 2026 rules on the official site.

Q4. Can I pick up in Yilan and return in Taichung?

Q7. Will there be snow on the high roads in December and January?

Possibly. Hehuanshan's snow season has usually started on 1 January and lasts about two months, with night closures and chain rules when there's snow or ice; Dasyueshan and Taipingshan also bring in controls during cold snaps. Check the Highway Bureau and park notices, and switch to lower spots like Shimen Reservoir or Aowanda if a control is in force.
